Secondary Schools (Age 13 to 18) - Years 9 to 13
Called either Colleges, High Schools or Grammar Schools.
Years 9 and 10:
Students are taught compulsory set of subjects consisting of English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Technology and Health. Students also choose a number of options such as music or a language. See our curriculum link.
Year 11: NCEA Level 1. Students take English as well as five other subjects. Most results are based on internally assessed work and an external exam sat in each subject in late November. Subjects are divided into achievement standards and results can include not achieved, achieved, achieved with merit, and achieved with excellence.
Year 12: NCEA Level 2. Students choose six subjects including English. As with NCEA Level 1 subjects are divided into achievement standards and results are reported the same as for Level 1.
Year 13: NCEA Level 3. Students choose six subjects. Many subjects need to have been studied at Year 11 and Year 12 level as pre-knowledge and skills are required. Most subjects have an internally assessed component. Again as with NCEA Levels 1 and 2 subjects are divided into achievement standards and results are reported the same as for Levels 1 and 2. External Scholarship examinations can be sat as separate subjects for those students wishing to do so.
