At Wanganui City College we aim to give international students the best learning experience possible.
Introduction Our aim as an ESOL department is:
To provide a 21st Century learning environment that prepares students for success in English.
ESOL lessons are held in a large sunny room with an experienced specialist teacher. Students have easy access to a wide range of reading material and learning opportunities through quality classroom resources and computers with internet connection. The lessons are carefully planned to build the language skills students need in their subject classes.
All students need to know how to read, write, speak and listen in English for their main subjects such as Science, Mathematics, Social Studies and of course English.
ESOL lessons give students the knowledge and skills necessary to reach success in these and optional subjects at junior and senior level.
We offer the following programmes, dependent on student numbers:
Junior English
For Y9 and Y10 students who require intensive English help. This would be assessed through the year with a final assessment as part of junior examinations.
Foundation English
For beginner to early intermediate levels. This class would teach the basic foundations of English, covering the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. This prepares the student for the demands of ESOL NCEA level one.
Middle English
For early intermediate to intermediate levels, covering the literacy demands of English at Year 11 and 12 level. Assessment will be throughout the year through NCEA Standards.
Upper English
For higher level English Students. We will be studying English for Academic Purposes (EAP) which may include IELTS preparation. Assessment will be throughout the year.
