Our 2009 International students gained considerable recognition at the senior prizegiving. Ka Kui Hon, Hong Kong, was 1st in Year 11 ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages). Sonoko Yamaguchi, Japan, was 1st in NCEA Art Level 1, while Ryusei Yano, Japan) gained a Merit Award in Year 11 ESOL and a Merit Award in NCEA Internal Science Level 1.
At the Year 12 level Reema Chand, Fiji, gained a Merit Award in NCEA Mathematics Level 2.
At Year 13 Ashreen Bano, Fiji, gained a Merit in NCEA Art Level 3, Tsubasa Nishio,Japan, was 1st in NCEA Japanese Level 3, and Waisake Ratunideuba, Fiji, gained a Merit Award in NCEA DIY Level 3. Ji Su Song (Korea) received the Cy Evans Cup (Excellence in Y13 Mathematics), the Dr Godwin Balasingam Award (Merit in Y13 Biology) and the Percy Higginbotham Award (1st Y13 Mathematics with Calculus).
Amongst the Special Awards, Feng Hui Ling (China) gained the ESOL Award (Student of the Year), Viliame Bogitini (Fiji) the June Dunstone Cup (Contribution to School Music) and Waisake Ratunideuba the 75th Jubilee Cup for Achievement.
All in all this was a very successful evening and our International students were very proud to receive their various awards. Two of students, Sonoko and Viliame played significant musical roles in the evening with Sonoko playing the piano as everyone entered the hall and also accompanying two brass musicians with a piece entitled ‘Water Music’. Viliame was one of three vocalists a group performance of ‘Lean on Me’. Our students will have to work hard to match the efforts of the 2009 senior International students.
