Greetings From Whanganui City College – the Heart of the City
The Whanganui City College Board of Trustees, Principal, Staff and Students, welcome International Students to our school.
Whanganui City College is situated in the heart of Whanganui City with approximately 330 students. Our school covers Years 9 – 13 of the New Zealand Curriculum. We care for and nurture every International Student into our school and encourage all students to participate in extra-curricular activities such as sport, music or cultural groups.
Founded in 1911, our school symbol ‘Te Kura o Te Manawa, the school with heart’ reflects our school philosophy. Our co-educational school is a multicultural community where students and their families are central to the school community. We pride ourselves on our warm and friendly school environment and in providing a safe and welcoming environment for all International students to develop and strive for excellence.
Whanganui City College is situated in the central city on 10 acres of park–like grounds, with extensive playing fields, turf court, swimming pool, gymnasium and courtyard areas.
Discover Whanganui
Whanganui is a small town of approximately 45,000 people, located on the Whanganui River, on the West Coast of the North Island. Whanganui was one of the earliest European planned towns in New Zealand. Europeans came to Whanganui from around 1840 as it had an accessible port and was a planned settlement. Today, we are blessed with a wonderful heritage main-street from that era. The Whanganui Region is fortunate to have easy accessibility to the coast, mountains and river landscapes. Whanganui therefore offers a large range of outdoor activities in a healthy environment.
The small city has a wide range of facilities including shopping, museums, art galleries, craft, banking, movies, restaurants etc. Whanganui has a mild year-round climate, a rich cultural heritage and a welcoming multicultural population – an ideal study destination for international student study.
Code of Practice
When students from other countries come to study in New Zealand, it is important that those students are well-informed, safe and properly cared for. Whanganui City College has agreed to observe and be
bound by the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. Copies of the Code, as published by the Minister of Education, are available at www.nzqa.govt.nz.
